Biomethane

Biomethane is a key component of the energy transition. It combines ecological responsibility with economic efficiency and offers flexible applications in electricity, heating, mobility, and industry. As an experienced partner, we support you throughout the entire life cycle—from the initial idea to successful distribution. Our solutions are modular, scalable, and tailored to your individual requirements.

Project development is the basis for every project. Here, we analyze locations, prepare feasibility studies, and develop economic concepts. Our expertise is based on many years of experience and successful reference projects—such as the Altenberge biogas cluster, where ten plants jointly implement a central processing facility with infrastructure.
In approval planning, we ensure that all legal and technical requirements are met. We prepare the necessary documents, coordinate with authorities, and guide you through the entire authorization process.
Financing is a crucial step. We structure financing models, develop robust business cases, and provide support in approaching investors. Investments in project partnerships are also possible – with the aim of securing long-term income streams.
Technical planning includes the design of the system, the selection of suitable components, and integration into existing systems.

With the start of the construction and commissioning phase, we take care of tendering, construction supervision, and technical commissioning. Our teams ensure smooth implementation and support you until successful commissioning.
During operation, we offer comprehensive services in operational management and optimization. Our control center is available around the clock, error analyses are performed in real time, and maintenance and spare parts supply are organized independently of manufacturers. We use our digital tool IDER to document and analyze all relevant operating data.

Applications for Biomethane

Biomethane in Mobility

In the mobility sector, biomethane can be used as bio-CNG or bio-LNG, offering a virtually greenhouse gas-neutral alternative to fossil fuels. Bio-CNG and bio-LNG offer significant potential for reducing emissions, particularly in heavy-duty transport. A key regulatory driver is the Renewable Energy Directive (RED III), which sets binding greenhouse gas reduction targets and promotes the use of advanced renewable fuels.

Biomethane in the Building Sector

In the building sector, biomethane can be used for heating. It can be flexibly integrated into existing gas infrastructure and supports the goal of achieving a climate-neutral building stock. The legal framework is currently defined by the Building Energy Act (GEG) and will be further developed in the future through the planned Building Modernization Act.

Biomethane in Industry and Commerce

In industry, biomethane is used as process energy (e.g., for high-temperature processes) or as a renewable raw material. Here, biomethane offers an important option for replacing fossil fuels, particularly in energy-intensive sectors. A key policy driver is the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS I), which creates incentives for the use of climate-friendly energy sources through rising CO₂ prices.

Biomethane in Electricity Generation

Biomethane can also be used in combined heat and power (CHP) plants for the simultaneous generation of electricity and heat. Under the Renewable Energy Act (EEG), it contributes to a secure, flexible, and demand-responsive electricity supply from renewable sources and supports the integration of volatile energy sources such as wind and solar.

Combination with Hydrogen

Biomethane can be used as a feedstock for the methanization of hydrogen. This creates hybrid solutions for sector coupling.

Why Biomethane Is Available Immediately – And Often the Better Choice

The energy transition requires solutions that are not only sustainable but can be implemented quickly. Biomethane meets precisely these requirements. While technologies such as photovoltaics, wind power, and heat pumps require high investments, long planning times, and structural adjustments, biomethane is already available today via the existing natural gas network. This means no costly conversions, no waiting for technicians, and no approval processes for new systems. Switching to biomethane is as easy as changing your tariff—and has an immediate effect on climate protection.
This is particularly relevant for households. A heat pump may be efficient in the long term, but the reality is different: High acquisition costs, limited availability of specialist companies, and long delivery times often delay the switch by years. Biomethane, on the other hand, uses the existing infrastructure. Existing heating systems can continue to be operated while the energy source becomes climate-neutral. This saves time, money, and stress.
Compared to photovoltaics or wind power, biomethane also benefits from flexibility. Not every roof is suitable for solar modules, nor is every region suitable for wind turbines. Biomethane is independent of location and weather conditions and can be used as needed. For tenants and owners of existing buildings, it is often the only realistic option for a quick transition to renewable energy.
In addition, biomethane offers a decisive advantage: it can be stored and transported. While electricity from solar and wind power fluctuates, biomethane provides a continuous supply of energy – for heating, electricity, and even mobility.

When combined with hydrogen, it creates an intelligent sector coupling that combines security of supply and climate protection.

In short, biomethane is immediately available, economically attractive, and technically uncomplicated. For households, this means climate-neutral heating without construction work, high investments, or long waiting times.

Service Biogasaufbereitungsanlagen

Certification and verification are key components of biomethane trading. We support you in obtaining REDcert and SURE sustainability certification, calculate your individual GHG reduction with the GHG Emission Check, and handle all the paperwork via Nabisy, the dena biogas register, and the EU database.

Your biomethane is marketed through our networks of municipal utilities, industrial partners, and within the framework of GHG quota trading. Whether bio-CNG, bio-LNG, or for feed-in into the natural gas grid, we find the right sales channel and assist you with contract drafting.

Biomethane can be stored, transported, and used in a variety of ways. Linking it with other sectors such as hydrogen, electricity, and heat creates new sales markets and synergies. A particular advantage is that the biogenic CO₂ separated during processing is climate-neutral and can be used as a raw material—for example, for dry ice, carbon dioxide, or the methanization of hydrogen.
