Colorants (dye) are an important part of our daily lives. They consist of a pigment and a binder (typical binders are e.g. oil or acryl). Pigments are insoluble, finely ground solids. The finer the pigments are ground, the better their properties are in terms of opacity and color stability. They are divided into four categories. There are inorganic natural and inorganic synthetic pigments as well as organic natural and organic synthetic pigments. The market for inorganic pigments - especially inorganic synthetic pigments - is larger than the market for natural pigments.
The pigments known to us tend to cake within the grinding system. Pigments in general show a critical flow behavior along the production process. This must be considered when selecting suitable length of pneumatic feeding, inlet devices and filter elements.
It is possible that the pigment already presents very fine elementary particles and the only subsequent process necessary is deagglomeration. In this case, the grinding technology to be used should not comprise a high level of grinding energy. The situation is different with pigments used for enamels. These materials can be difficult to grind, so grinding with a jet mill may be the most suitable solution.
