Lithium Carbonate

Modern lithium-ion batteries are named after the metal Lithium. Lithium carbonate - produced from lithium-containing ores (pegmatites) and brines - is the most important lithium compound. Pure lithium carbonate is obtained by a final reaction with carbon dioxide.

Lithium carbonate in battery quality must have special properties, which in turn are subject to the constant development of battery cell chemistry and production technology:

NEUMAN & ESSER offers two solutions for grinding lithium carbonate. Both the ultra-fine impact classifier mill eXtra ICX and the jet mill OCX are tailor-made for the special challenges in the production of ultra-fine lithium powder for high-performance lithium-ion batteries. The lithium produced on these machines can significantly improve the battery properties. In particular, high capacity and energy density as well as short charging cycles are essential requirements for batteries used in electric vehicles (EV).

The impact classifier mill ICX (Impact Classifier mill eXtra) is well suited for grinding lithium carbonate and producing the specific particle size distribution required. Proven technologies for processing lithium materials are used: The highly efficient internal classifier ensures a steep top particle size limitation, while the wear-resistant design guarantees the purity of the finished product.

Characteristics of our ICX:

  • sharp upper particle size limits and steep particle size distributions
  • optimized grinding chamber design for temperature-sensitive products, energy efficiency and low wear
  • simple operation and low noise emission
  • easy cleaning and maintenance
  • robust and durable grinder housing
  • direct drive concept: energy-efficient, compact, low-maintenance, quiet
  • combined, extra-fine dry grinding and sifting
  • top size cut: 5 μm to 50 μm
  • throughput: 10 kg/h - 20,000 kg/h
  • available as a pressure-shock-resistant version for explosive dusts

The fluidized bed opposed jet classifier mill OCX (Opposed Jet Classifier Mill eXtra) is particularly suitable for dry ultrafine grinding of lithium carbonate with a steep particle size distribution in the <10 µm range. The particle size reduction occurs during jet grinding due to high-intensity particle-particle collisions. Due to the high grinding intensity, this grinding concept is particularly suitable for the highest demands on the fineness to be achieved. In addition, there are no comminution tools or other moving machine parts in the grinding zone, which prevents wear and contamination. Jet grinding is therefore particularly recommended for lithium carbonate applications where high demands are placed on contamination-free grinding.

Characteristics of our OCX:

  • sharp top size boundaries
  • designs for wear protection and free of contamination
  • energy efficiency through the combination of proven grinding principles with the newest classifier technology
  • excellent accessibility for cleaning purposes
  • ultra-fine dry grinding with steep particle size distributions
  • fineness in the range of 1-10 µm can be achieved
  • throughput range: 10 - 10,000 kg/h
  • available as a pressure-shock resistant version for explosive dusts
